ICONS is a group exhibition of works created by well-known artists from the local and national scene inspired by a music icon from yesterday or today chosen by the author according to their preferences.
At the heart of this exhibition is the idea, dear to the TempoLibero association (promoter of exhibitions dedicated to Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Umberto Eco), that artists – with their many languages – are able to brilliantly express and tell the stories of the people they love and who have influenced their development.

For this exhibition, curator Clorinda Irace asked the invited artists to become multipliers, through their own works, of musical myths they have loved and still love. The results are surprising, as a varied panorama emerges in which icons of our present (Paolo Conte, Franco Battiato, Pino Daniele, Luciano Berio, John Lennon, just to name a few) are placed alongside those of the past (Mozart, Vivaldi) or even musical instruments (such as the spectacular violin in the work “Il Violinista”), jazz icons, and the image of a primordial sound. There are many techniques and artistic choices, but common to all the works is the passion with which the artists have worked, each with their own recognizable stylistic signature. Very interesting and straightforward is the set-up by Alexandra Abbate, who leads the visitor on a highly engaging journey among the musical myths of yesterday and today. Artists from different fields are involved—photography, sculpture, painting—heterogeneous in generation, artistic choices, and background, but united by one element: a passion for music and its performers, from yesterday or today.
The exhibition is part of the broader project LA MUSICA E LA CITTA’ which, for 2019, the year of music, the TempoLibero association is carrying forward. The first stage of this was the photographic exhibition of the same name by Nando Calabrese at the Maschio Angioino. The project involves the participation of young musicians through a connection with schools with a musical focus. The students, guided by their teachers, will enliven the opening and closing of the exhibition at the Pan with sound performances and choreographies, as well as—during the days of the exhibition—listening sessions related to the icons whose figures and works have been reinterpreted by the artists. An exhibition of high cultural value that aims to promote artists who live and work mainly in Naples and Campania. Furthermore, due to the quality of the works presented and the simple readability of the proposed theme, the exhibition is accessible to a wide and diverse audience who can visit it free of charge, meeting the artists who will be present in turn during the days of the exhibition.
